Effective political action is essential to protecting civil rights and advancing the cause of social justice.  The positive potential in engaging voters and influencing decision makers to craft good public policy is undeniable. Government must be held accountable. To do this, citizens must be educated and empowered. If citizens are not educated they cannot deftly engage elected officials, and hold legislators accountable when they take action that is discriminatory or otherwise not in best interest of their constituents. If citizens are not empowered through training, Get Out the Vote (GOTV) efforts, and the like: the potent tool of the ballot may not be fully employed.

Although individual races are important, the fact remains that communities and issues outlive candidates. Whether a particular candidate has 4 years or 8 years in office pales in comparison to the ability of a community to articulate needs, access the levers of power, and leverage that access for positive solutions.

What are you or your organization doing to ensure that District residents are not only registered, but also fully participate in the 2012 elections through voting and advocacy?

UNSURE?

Attend the DC NAACP Voter Empowerment Training on November 19th. We will assist you in setting personal/organizational goals and crafting a plan to achieve them.

In 2012, the mission of the NAACP, D.C. Branch’s voter empowerment efforts will be to build a grassroots advocacy organization that persists.
